Likud, Israel and the Left

The Dutch media don't like Sharon much. That is why I often hear from people I know: Ah, Israel, with that terrible man, that war criminal….eh, Sharon.

For example, a leading Dutch daily:

de Volkskrant

A government of stagnation", that is what an Israeli commentator already called the new coalition of Ariel Sharon. With the extreme right National Religious Party and the center-bending anti-religious Shinui party Sharon would have no room for developing a new policy towards the Palestinians. In fact Sharon seems to have manoevred himself exactly in the position where he feels most comfortable. Covered by Shinui he can play the statesman and make peace noises. The right wing will whistle him back in time, so that he never has to take a real step towards peace….

Jews also talk down about Sharon and the Likud. And from their mouth or pen it is an easy step to become accepted truth. "Israel is a fascist and racist state" a man on the train to Amsterdam told me. I don't know his name, but he calls himself a Jew.

Anti-Semitism is growing under the guise of 'pro-Palestinism'. Of course everyone is free to express an opinion. That is both the strength and the weakness of democracy. But anyone who criticizes the leading Likud party and ultra-orthodox as 'racist' and 'war mongering' has to realize that this has repercussions for Israeli society, and not only for the Likud party.
Sharon has not been the militant premier everyone thought and many hoped him to be. Only in the latest months the terror nests are adequately dealt with and the number of suicide attacks has decreased. Not because the Palestinians have not tried, but because the army pre-empted them.
People living in the safety of a Dutch city must realize that the situation in Israel cannot be compared to theirs.
And Sharon is doing a good job at this moment for those who live in the fear of terror in Tel Aviv and Haifa.

The next point often brought up are the settlements. The media depict them as full of extreme rights -fascist - occupyers of Arab soil. People who saw a flowering village they liked and took in away from the owners. But are they? Of course not. They live on land that was bought off Arab owners, or on land that was empty before the 'settlers' built homes there. No land without remuneration, anyway. The former Arab owners never say so, because more often than not, Arabs who sell their land to Jews are killed off by their brethren. And of course because it does not sound well in the international media.

The Labour government started settling people in the 'territories' as a kind of shield against invasion from Jordan. The settlements were developments areas, and the people who lived there got cheap housing and tax deductions. That attracted many young couples, and not only the religious ones.
If they were really the only obstacle to peace no one in their right mind would leave them there. However, they are only a pretext for war. A million of Arabs live within the border of 1948 in Israel. If they can live in Israel, why should not a Jew live in Arab territory? Don't the Palestinians officially say they want to live side by side in peace with the Jews in two states?

So why can't they tolerate Jews in their territory and make a lot of propaganda to have their children kill themselves and as many Jews as they can in the process?

Why do their leaders say it is a good deed to Allah to kill Jews?
Because they don't want any Jews in their neighbourhood, that is why. They want to throw all the Jews out of Israel, and they want the support of the international community to make a start with the inhabitants of the settlements.

They have been quite succesful: it has become a matter of course that a Jew in Arab territory is a criminal by rights. Many Jews agree to that. They believe that peace is within reach if only the territories are vacated by Jews - made Judenrein.

If that were the case, there would have been peace in 1948, there would have been peace in 1967 and in 1973. There were no communities then. There were however, Arab incursions, wars, hijackings, kidnappings, bombings etc. of Jewish properties and people. Just as there are now.

So by deduction, it might be said, that the settlements don't make any difference. Before and after their construction there were the same Arab acts of war. They just make Israel a bit safer, because the people there take the brunt of the terror attacks and they act as a shield between Israel and the Palestinians.

The Arabs keep repeating that there is really no other obstacle for peace with Israel and that the attacks will go on until the 'occupied territories' will be liberated. Whoever follows their media - government controlled and including MBC from London, knows, that to them the 'occupied territories' are all of Israel. To them Haifa and Tel Aviv are also 'settlements' within the 'Zionist entity'. Israel does not exist as a recognized state.

Most people do not know much about the problems surrounding the Israeli-Arab conflict. So they believe the Arab propaganda that resounds a lot louder than the Israeli answer in the western media, especially because most reporters believe it too.

People call out loudly that the hardliner Sharon (see the article in the Volkskrant that is not an isolated one) does not want peace. He wants war, he glorifies war, he is a man of war, he seems to glorify in piles of dead bodies around him, that is what people are given to understand.
Jews on radio and television call out just as loudly. Most of the makers of the news programs invite guests who agree with their opinion.

And the effect is: there, the Jews themselves say it too, so it is true.
No mention is made of the fact that it is only one of the opinions.
Jewish people also, like Harry de Winter, Judith Belinfante, Clairy Polak and other, will not tell that they are in fact representatives of extreme leftist Israeli parties. They call Sharon 'a disaster for the country'. The media call out in their wake: "Sharon's re-election takes peace farther away than ever" - waving away the majority of the Israelis who elected him and the rightist parties - as stupid, they do not want peace.

The average Dutchman thinks: there, you see, Israelis (and thus Jews) are warmongers. Attacks are justified, because they are occupyers, exactly like the Germans during World War 2.
It would be good for Israel and the Jewish people if Jews who vent their opinion on radio and television, tell the public that this is their opinion and not the universal truth.
